English Department Curriculum
Needs Analysis
Need Analysis which is also called Need Assessment is the process of evaluating, identifying, and assessing needs. It focuses on the future rather than the past – it means that what should be done in the future, not what was done in the past. Needs Analysis is a useful tool to understand students’ needs and to help the implementation of educational policies.
Based in the facts above, Directorate of National Curriculum in the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan launched a program Named-National Program of Curriculum Revision and Development in order to renew and develop academic curriculums. The program for English Language and Literature curriculum was conducted in three phases in which several lecturers, professionals, officials, and stakeholders and related organizations worked together to bring all the necessary changes in the curriculum.
The revision and development of the curriculum took place based on:
- Islamic and national values;
- Current needs of the market;
- Experiences of lectures;
- Feedbacks of the graduates; and 5- Needs of the students.
Program Learning Outcomes
By completing this program, the students should:
- Develop effective communication skills in order to achieve personal and professional success
- Analyze and apply the components of linguistics scientifically
- Demonstrate the ability to read a variety of texts accurately
- Recognize, analyze and produce a variety of written texts
- Discuss British, American and world literary genres and theories
- Use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for language learning and teaching purposes
- Demonstrate and Understanding of and conduct original research studies independently in their field of study
- Apply research methods in their academic and professional practices
- Recognize the basic theories, concepts, and practices of translation
- Perform both oral and written texts translations successfully
- Apply study skills in their academic life to become autonomous learners.
- Acquire and apply various strategies, techniques, and language theories to enhance their learning and teaching skills.
Expected Learning Outcomes
By completing this program, the students are expected be able to:
- Be an effective English language communicator
- Analyze components of linguistics scientifically
- Discuss, analyze and criticize British, American and world literary texts
- Demonstrate the ability to translate written texts successfully
- Conduct researches in their academic and professional life
- Practice and apply various strategies, techniques, and language theories to enhance their learning skills.
- Perform oral translation (interpretation)
- Apply literary theories on literary works
- Become autonomous learners
- Use Educational Technology in their academic and professional life
- Demonstrate the ability to read and understand various texts
Learning Strategy
Based on credit system, the curriculum of department of English Language and Literature is designed for four academic years. Each academic year includes two semesters, and each semester lasts for 16 weeks. During these four years, the students are required to pass 155 credits which are categorized as follow:
- Basic course: 37 credits
- Professional course: 81 credits
- Elective courses: 2 credits
- Inclusive courses: 30 credits
- Monograph (project): 5 credits
